Origin

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord:  and He delighteth in his way.

Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with His hand.

The Origin of the Recipe

This special family recipe originated in Holland during the early 1900’s.  My husband, Gerrit, had an uncle “Oom Bep” who lived in Apeldoorn.  As a baker he developed an ice cream recipe which he used to make ice cream cakes.  These rich and creamy cakes were well known in the area and ordered well in advance to ensure they would be part of special occasions.

In 1994 while Gerrit and I were visiting “Oom Bep and Tante Nan,” he shared his recipe with us and demonstrated how to make it.

Oom Bep passed away on January 9, 1999.  Since then, we were surprised to learn we are the sole owners of his delicious, gourmet ice cream recipe.

It’s our desire now to share this wonderful taste experience with you so it can become a part of your memories also!   –  Cathy Van Essen

The Origin of the Powder Mix

product_cvsCathy’s brother John, a missionary with Wycliffe Bible Translators, travels around the world teaching seminars.  He really enjoys the flavour of our family’s ice cream and asked if we could convert the Original Recipe into a powder mix.  His idea was to take the ice cream powder on his travels as a hostess gift.

Cathy went to work converting the recipe into a powder, thus making it much more convenient for transporting and storage.  Another advantage also emerged! – It’s now faster and easier to make the ice cream!  Within a matter of minutes, you can have homemade, gourmet ice cream made and ready for the freezer – NO ice cream machine needed!

How the Name “DUTCH MONARCH” came about:

DUTCH – This is a Dutch recipe originating in Holland.  MONARCH – Cathy is a “King’s Daughter” twice over.
Gerrit, Cathy’s husband, was born in the Netherlands, in the town of Apeldoorn – where the Royal Palace “Het Loo” is located.  His family home was one of several just outside the Palace garden walls.  Gerrit’s grandfather, also named Gerrit, served as the Palace gardener under three Dutch Queens during his lifetime – Queen Emma, Queen Wilhelmina, and Queen Juliana.  Her physical father’s surname is “King” and her Heavenly Father is the “King of Kings.

Our Family Business

Because of the delicious taste and uniqueness of this ice cream recipe, Gerrit encouraged Cathy to begin selling packages of the ice cream powder mix at Craft & Gift Shows around Ontario.  In March of 2010 our family business began in earnest. Each one in the family has become involved in their own unique way, helping the business run smoothly.

Vision Statement

Our desire is to see the business built up and the profits used to support involvement in the spread of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ around the world.

Mission Statement

(COMING SOON)

NO SUNDAY BUSINESS has become a real blessing in our busyness.  God owns our business and we have chosen to honour Him, our Lord and Saviour, as He commanded, by resting and remembering Him one day a week.  We have picked Sunday to be that day.
